Combat in Hytale rewards preparation as much as reflexes. Knowing which weapon to bring matters. So does knowing when to block, when to dodge, and when to just run.
Weapon Types
Each weapon plays differently:
- Swords — Fast attacks, medium damage. Good all-around choice for most fights.
- Axes — Slower but hit hard. Break shields. Use against armored enemies.
- Hammers — Very slow, very powerful. Staggers enemies. Best for boss fights where you can time your hits.
- Bows — Ranged damage with headshot bonuses. Essential for flying enemies or starting fights on your terms.
- Daggers — Fastest attacks, lowest damage per hit. Backstab bonus if you can get behind the target.
DPS vs Burst: When Each Matters
High DPS weapons (swords, daggers) win long fights. You chip away consistently.
Burst weapons (hammers, axes) win when you can only hit once or twice before backing off. Boss fights often work this way.
Bows keep you safe but deal less damage than melee. Trade-off depends on how confident you are up close.
Fast enemies need fast weapons. Slow, armored enemies reward patience with a heavy weapon.

Core Mechanics
Four things to learn:
- Blocking — Hold right-click. Reduces damage but drains stamina. Axes cut through blocks better than other weapons.
- Dodging — Double-tap a movement key. Brief invincibility window. Uses stamina.
- Stamina — Stop mashing attack. Empty stamina means no blocking, no dodging.
- Positioning — Flanking deals more damage. Getting surrounded gets you killed.
Common Enemies
- Zombies — Slow and weak. Practice your timing here.
- Skeletons — Shoot at you from range. Close the gap fast or shoot back.
- Wolves — Hunt in packs, move fast. Don't let them circle you.
- Cave Spiders — Poison. Bring antidotes or wear poison-resistant armor.
Boss Fights
Every boss has a pattern. Learn it.
- Watch for attack windups (usually 1-2 seconds of animation)
- Count the combo (most bosses swing 2-3 times before pausing)
- Hit during the pause, then back off
- Bring the right weapon type and healing items
Before You Fight
Check your loadout:
- Main damage weapon
- Backup weapon for different situations
- Healing items, buffs, antidotes
- Armor that matches the enemy's damage type
The Weapon Comparison tool shows stats side by side.
When to Repair
Damaged weapons deal less damage. But repairs cost materials. Consider:
- Current durability
- Repair cost vs. making a new one
- How far you are from home
The Repair Calculator tells you which is cheaper.
